Eaglehawk's Oldest Firetruck
- our recent viewingRecently the club visited the Eaglehawk Firestation as part of the Vocational Program.
Eaglehawk CFA Captain Eric Smith ably supported by many of the volunteers took us through the station. Not only did we see the restored truck, originally purchased in the 1930's but many of the trophies housed at the station.

Guest Speaker
Chairman Lola Miller introduced Wayne Gregson.Wayne has been in many roles including Editor Bendigo Advertiser, Maldon newspaper, Bendigo Councillor and is current President of Rotary Club of Bendigo Sandhurst.
Wayne spoke from the heart of his upbringing and the difficulties he and his siblings faced.
His mother raised 5 children (3 boys), with his father, who was deeply affected by his terrible wartime experiences as a prisoner of war and slave labourer for the Japanese.
A lot of Wayne's adult medical afflictions he has attributed to his mother's incessant smoking. The evidence is in the remarkable parallel medical history he shares with his older brother.
Wayne is a passionate anti-smoker, and the genesis of this was work he carried out for Damian Drum. Damian commissioned Wayne to investigate the impact of tobacco on the community in order to raise a private member's bill to restrict cigarettes from sale to minors and ban it use in more public spaces and/or places that impacted on children, hopefully ban it altogether!
Wayne had smoked since he was 13 years old until his mid-thirties. His parents would buy he and his siblings cigarettes, as they were not aware of the dangers, it was the norm.
Smoking is a great threat in East Timor were 40.3% of young people smoke (compared with 17-18% in Australia). It has a greater impact as Timorese typically have children younger and smoke during the pregnancy...adversely affecting their babies.
Bendigo has about 716 deaths annually and 85 of these can be attributed to smoking (either directly or indirectly).
Smoking starts in the teenage years (90%) and costs Australia an estimated 30 billion dollars annually.
Wayne obviously would like the community to be more vocal in opposing the sale and use of tobacco products.
He left us with a quote by Brooke Shields "smoking kills. If you are killed, you've lost a very important part of your life." Sage advice indeed!!
