Reports and Announcements
Leon Scott: Last weekend a working bee was held at Truscott reserve. Thank you to Ron Payne and Gordon McKern attending. Another one being held this Saturday.
Rita O’Brien: Thank you and certificate received from the Cancer Council for raising over $5000 for the Relay for Life. A research project has been called the “Rotary Club of Eaglehawk Research Project.”
John Jones: Our Turkish students have been here for nearly four weeks. The planting of a Gallipoli pine is taking place at the Eaglehawk Secondary College at mid-day. On Monday they went to the Turkish Consulate General and then hosted at Parliament house. The students showed us some pictures from Healesville Sanctuary and Sovereign Hill. They have also been to Melbourne, Echuca, Hanging Rock & Sydney. They have noted quite a few variances between Turkey and here and have had a great time.
A certificate of Appreciation was received from the Dahlia and Arts.
Guest Speaker:
Past president John Haugh introduced our guest speaker Laurie Fitzgerald, Chief Executive Officer of the Eaglehawk U.F.S. Laurie has lived in Eaglehawk all his life growing up in Campbell Street. Laurie and Margaret were married in 1972 and has three married children and 6.5 grandchildren.
“What is the best kept secret in Eaglehawk?” The EUFS is the largest member based organization in Eaglehawk. In 1916 the pharmacy was started. Laurie took us through the changes that the shop front has seen over the years.
In 1959 the late P.P. Vin Walsh was the pharmacist filling approximately 20 scripts a day. That same year they took on a sales assistant - Patricia Brown.
The ‘spark’ that set the EUFS on the path of separating themselves from their competitors was having to explain to a police officer that there is no one owner of the pharmacy as it’s owned by it’s members with the profits being given back to the community.
They set up an initiative called the community awards and asked their customers to identify people in the community who deserved recognition for their contributions.
Since establishing themselves in the community an 18% increase has occurred in profits. They have been able to assist most community groups within Eaglehawk with contributions ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.
Laurie presented Leon Scott with his own ‘nit’ comb along with a further 100 ‘nit’ combs and a large box of Hair Brushes to take to East Timor for use by the children.
Chairman P.P. John Haugh (who was a Board Member of the E.U.F.S. for many years) thanked Laurie appropriately and presented him with the usual Eaglehawk Coffee Mug.

Rotary Friendship Exchange:
Through the fellowship exchange program, teams of 10 to 12 Rotarians are hosted over two weeks by 3 or 4 Clubs in another country, experiencing other cultures and building new friendships. This reciprocal program advances international understanding and peace through personal contact across borders while developing interdistrict and interclub relationships that lead to fellowship and service projects. The Rotary Friendship Exchange committee coordinates these exchanges.
Our Club is hosting a visit from 12 Rotarians and Partners (5 couples & 2 single ladies) from District 1070 in United Kingdom from 21st October to 24th October 2010. We still need a couple more ‘hosts’ for the 3 nights they are in our area. Please speak to International Director, Heather Ridge, if you think that you may be able to assist. The visitors pay all their own expenses and hosts only provide accommodation and any meals at home. We will also need a few people to assist with transport.
