New Orleans – Colin and Julie Hutchieson
New Orleans is a fascinating city. Still suffering the aftermath of Katrina there are areas still being reconstructed and not all of those who fled have returned. The population was once about 450,000 – it now is about half that and reconstruction is still going on.
The history is a mixture of French, Spanish, pirates, African slaves and Native Americans the strongest being the French influence. The Fleur de Lis – Symbol is still prevalent, many of the names are French and the areas is still strongly Catholic in a predominantly Protestant country. Even the Mardi Gras is not only French but French Catholic.
As part of the Rotary International Convention we took the opportunity to go to a host hospitality night. Four bus loads of Rotarians were taken to Destrehan Plantation and hosted by the Rotary Club of St Charles Parish. Other Rotary Clubs in the area held different host hospitality evenings on the same night. We paid $20 head for the evening which included local food – jambalya, gumbo and alligator piquante sauce and beer as well as a tour of the plantation house
New Orleans people are very proud of their distinctive cajun food. While we were there we tried gumbo, jambalya and Colin tried the alligator piquante sauce. We also had to have the beignets and chicory coffee at Cafe du Monde.
Although there were major floods in the south while we were there various spillways were opened to flood farming land and New Orleans was not in danger although the river was close to the top of some of the levee banks.
The Convention theme was naturally Jazz with performances before each Plenary session.
We caught up with Ruth and her husband from Ontario again and were able to confirm that they had enjoyed the cherry ripe we gave them in Montreal . We also made friends with a couple from France ( he was English) and were invited to stay with them in their house on the Mediterranean.
The House of Friendship was the place to buy merchandise, make new friends and learn about Rotary projects in other parts of the world.
The main emphasis of this convention was on Polio eradication and on YoungerMembership.
We are looking forward to next year’s Convention in Bangkok with Registration fees at US$160 and relatively inexpensive airfares. We are hoping to get together a group from Bendigo clubs to go so start planning for it now. 6-9 May 2012.

Rotary Information
RI President Elect Kalyan Bannerjee said “We are the doers of our communities, the leaders, the ones who are most involved, who see the problems and have the means to find the solutions,” and went on to say “I am asking you to reach within and unleash your inner power and then use it to embrace everything and everyone around you.”
“There are so many areas in which we have been successful -- working for clean, safe water; spreading literacy; working in so many ways with Generation Next, our youth. And of course, our greatest project, polio eradication,” “If we want to really achieve the impossible, we have to have not only persistence, but vision we have to be looking past what we are doing now, at what we can and should be doing in the days and years to come.
